On the air in the streaming series “Griselda”, which premiered on Thursday (25) on Netflix, about Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, owner of one of the largest drug empires in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s, actress Sofía Vergara, the character’s countrywoman, relied on the power of makeup to transform herself into the “godmother of cocaine”.

Known for her iconic role as Gloria Pritchett in the comedy series “Modern Family”, which aired between 2009 and 2020, the actress had to undergo a radical visual transformation to get into the shoes of the drug dealer. “Getting the look right was very important to me because it needed to disappear. I didn’t want anyone to think about me or my latest role as Gloria Pritchett,” Vergara said in a statement released by the streaming platform, adding that she had an incredible hair and makeup design team for the job.

Vergara spent about an hour and a half a day in the makeup process before filming, which included prosthetic eyebrows and nose, twisted teeth and lower, less voluminous hairstyles. Despite being laborious, the result should appear subtle, according to Andrés Baiz, director and executive producer of “Griselda”.

For this, Angela Nogaro and Dennis Parker, heads of the production’s makeup and hair department, worked together with the actress’s beauty team, makeup artist Todd McIntosh and hairdresser Kelly Kline, to create the character’s look. For McIntosh, the issue was to take the actress’s “absolutely exotic” face and transform it into an ordinary one. To achieve this, the actress’s striking eyebrows were covered by prosthetics and thinner false eyebrows glued on top. The process also included a prosthetic nose and a slightly curved, slightly irregular, and slightly yellowish plate of teeth, as the character smokes throughout the program.
