Senegal knocked out of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after losing on penalties to Ivory Coast. Temporary, Tanjung Verde also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Senegal vs Ivory Coast in the last 16 match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations was presented at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, Tuesday (30/1). Singa Teranga was able to open the scoring when the game had only been running for four minutes.

Sadio Mane’s cross was well controlled by Habib Diallo in the penalty box. After exercising chest control, Diallo immediately fired a hard kick which broke into the hosts’ goal.

The 1-0 score for Senegal lasted until the final minutes of the match. When the match seemed to belong to Senegal, Ivory Coast were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute.

The referee pointed to the spot after reviewing VAR because Nicolas Pepe was fouled by Edouard Mendy. Franck Kessie, who stepped forward as executor, carried out his duties well.

A 1-1 draw closed out the 90 minutes. The match must continue into extra time.

In extra time no goals were scored. A penalty shootout determines victory in this match.

In the high-five round, Ivory Coast managed to emerge victorious with a score of 5-4.

Senegalese player Moussa Niakhate was the only player who missed a penalty. His kick hit the goal post.

Senegal, who is the defending champion, was eliminated. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast advanced to the last eight.

Ivory Coast followed in the steps of Cape Verde which also qualified for the semifinals. Cape Verde confirmed this after winning 1-0 over Mauritania at the Felix Houphouet Stadium. The only goal in this match was created by Ryan Mendes through a penalty in the 88th minute.
