Second division soccer team Holstein Kiel suffered an unexpected setback in the promotion battle: Coach Marcel Rapp’s team lost to relegation candidates 1. FC Kaiserlautern on Saturday with a deserved 1:3 (1:2) and lost their lead in the table.

Brave guests laid the foundation for success on the fjord with a courageous performance before the break. The Kiel team, who were sorely missing the suspended Lewis Holtby, didn’t have the means to turn the game their way that day.

“Of course we are disappointed,” Kiel captain Philipp Sander told NDR. “Kaiserslautern played a clever game. The goals conceded came at times that hurt a lot.” The North Germans want to work through this in the coming days. “The fact that we lose a game doesn’t knock us down. We continue on our path,” said coach Marcel Rapp.

Holstein pursuers Düsseldorf only play a draw

Later on Saturday evening, Kiel’s disappointment over the defeat against FCK should have diminished a lot. Since Schalke 04 drew 1-1 against Düsseldorf, Holstein only lost one point from the lead over Fortuna on matchday 31. With three match days to go, Kiel is now five points ahead of the Rhinelanders. Next Sunday the “Storks” will be performing in Wiesbaden (1:30 p.m. in the NDR Livecenter). There they could make promotion perfect if Düsseldorf loses to Nuremberg on Friday.

Cold shower after twelve minutes

With their euphoric fans behind them, KSV showed from the start that their path should lead to the Bundesliga. But after a shot from Sander, which FCK goalkeeper Julian Krahl was able to parry with difficulty (9th), the unexpected setback followed: After a corner from Tymoteusz Puchacz, ex-Kiel player Daniel Hanslik rose highest at the second post and scored to make it 1: 0 for the relegation candidate (13th). This broke the streak of Kiel keeper Timon Weiner, who had kept his box clean for six games and a total of 598 minutes.

The guests continued to play courageously forward and gained an advantage; the Schleswig-Holsteiners were visibly impressed. But the Kiel team countered the high-ranking Lauterers coldly and equalized: Sander deliberately played a long ball to Alexander Bernhardsson, who stormed into the penalty area and confidently finished to equalize (25th).

Palatinate present again

The home team got into the game better and better and actually taking the lead seemed only a matter of time. But immediately before the half-time whistle, the Palatinate team went ahead again: after a blocked shot, the rebound landed at Filip Kaloc on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder shot with his left and marked the 2-1 half-time lead (45th + 4).

Holstein forced to change

The deficit wasn’t the only bad news for the favored “Storks”: due to injuries, Sander and top scorer Steven Skrzybski had to be replaced at half-time, like Timo Becker (29th). Marvin Schulz, Fiete Arp and Lasse Rosenboom came for the trio. After the break, an open exchange of blows developed with opportunities for both sides.

Patrick Erras’ header (55′), Shuto Machino (57′), Schulz (58′, 70′) and Bernhardsson (73′) could have equalized, while on the other side Hanslik had a good opportunity to score his second goal ( 64.).

Knight decides the game

After the “storks” had been running in vain for a long time, a Lauterer counterattack made the decision. Ben Zolinski played to Marlon Ritter on the edge of the penalty area, who calmly finished (83′). A deserved success for determined guests and a setback for KSV, who once again have to worry about being promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time.
