Marie-Theres Nadig enchanted skiing Switzerland in the 1970s with her great successes. The St. Gallen resident is now 70 years old.
At the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo, which also counted as the World Championships, Marie-Theres Nadig became the nation’s favorite. At the tender age of 17, she won gold medals in the downhill and giant slalom.
Nadig’s two Olympic victories were surprising not only because of her young age, but also because she had never won a World Cup race before. She only achieved this in 1975.
Great ski career
Sapporo was the starting signal for a successful career. Until her retirement in July 1981, Nadig celebrated 24 World Cup victories and secured the overall World Cup in her final season. In Lake Placid in 1980 she also won Olympic and World Championship bronze in the downhill.
Nadig is known for her reserved, down-to-earth, but determined manner. Both during her time as a racing driver and afterwards as a trainer of young female skiers, she always went her own way.
During her active time as a ski racer, she played football for FC Zurich in the off-season.
