According to Yonhap News Agency, in response to the recent forest fires in the eastern region of South Korea, the South Korean Central Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters estimated that as of 11 am on the 6th, more than 14,200 hectares of forests have been destroyed. The authorities decided to designate Uljin County, North Gyeongsang Province and Samcheok City, Gangwon Province as the hardest hit areas.
According to reports, the wildfire caused no casualties. A total of 7,374 local residents were evacuated, but hundreds of facilities were destroyed. The South Korean forest and fire department has invested a total of 89 helicopters, 834 fire trucks, and more than 16,000 people to participate in the firefighting mission.
At present, many road restrictions have been lifted, and local roads have resumed traffic.
On the 6th, South Korean President Moon Jae-in decided to designate Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province and Samcheok City in Gangwon Province as the worst-hit areas.
Moon Jae-in said that the government will make every effort to carry out post-disaster reconstruction and strive for an early return to normal life for the victims.
