[Overseas Network]According to Sri Lanka’s “Island” report on the 12th, on the 11th local time, Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa issued a statement saying that a new prime minister and cabinet will be appointed within this week to prevent the country from falling into anarchy.
Rajapaksa said that after the establishment of the new government, he will grant more powers to the legislature through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, so as to facilitate the new prime minister to advance the work plan. Rajapaksa added that he has recently received a proposal to abolish the presidential system, and he will discuss it after the new government is stabilized, hoping that everyone will exercise maximum restraint for now.
Rajapaksa also mentioned the violence that took place in Sri Lanka on the 9th. The violence resulted in the death of a member of Congress and the injury of more than 300 people. He said all participants in the violent attack would be brought to justice and those who organized and instigated the violence would also be punished.
