Supreme Defense Council with Mattarella and Draghi at the start

The Supreme Defense Council expresses «the strongest condemnation of the unjustifiable military aggression launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which represents a serious and unacceptable violation of international law and a concrete threat to global security and stability. The Italian Republic asks the Russian Federation for the immediate cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of forces outside the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine ”. This is what is read in the press release issued at the end of the meeting chaired at the Quirinale by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
«Italy reiterates its full support for the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, a friendly European country and democracy affected in its sovereignty. The Italian Republic expresses the utmost closeness and solidarity to the Ukrainian people and their legitimate institutions, to the victims and to the many people who will suffer the consequences. In addressing the current crisis, Italy will maintain close contact with its partners in all major international fora. Together with EU member states and NATO allies, it is imperative to respond with unity, timeliness and determination. The imposition of severe measures on the Russian Federation sees Italy acting with conviction within the framework of coordination within the European Union. So that Europe does not suddenly fall into a whirlwind of wars, it is necessary to act with strength and far-sightedness to restore the primacy of international law and the safeguarding of the principles and values ​​that have guaranteed peace and stability to our continent ”.
