The Central News Agency reported that after the WHO announces the candidates, the Executive Committee will conduct a preliminary review in January 2022 to ensure that the candidates are eligible and conduct interviews. Then, the nomination will be sent to the World Health Assembly (WHA) for voting in May. Passed by the vote, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’ second term will begin in August, with a term of five years.
The WHO stated that the 28 member states that nominated Tedros, including Germany, France, Austria, Spain, Hungary, Indonesia, Kenya, etc., but the United States and China are not among the nominating countries, nor is Tedros’ home country Ethiopia. .
Tedros is a former Ethiopian foreign minister, but in recent years his hometown of Tigray, the ruling party of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), exchanged fire with the Ethiopian government. The military has also accused Tedros of acting for the people of Tigray. The Liberation Front obtains weapons and diplomatic support.
Tedros was nominated by other countries without the support of the current Ethiopian government.
