The media has played an important role in the life of the Afghan population over the past twenty years. Since the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan crumbled and the Taliban seized power, the media have shut down after another, due to economic problems and pressure from Koranic students. The Taliban restricted free speech and blacked out broadcasters.
