Budi Gunawan, a Police General who currently serves as Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) has built a brilliant career in the Indonesian police institution. He was born on December 11 1959 in Surakarta and became the best graduate of the Police Academy in 1983, received the Adhi Makayasa award, and completed his education at a relatively young age, namely 24 years.

Career

Meanwhile, Budi’s career began when he was an aide to President Megawati Soekarnoputri in 2001-2004. He was then promoted to the rank of brigadier general, becoming the youngest general in 2004-2006.

His career journey involved a number of strategic positions, including Jambi Police Chief, Head of Binkum Polri Division, Bali Police Chief, to Deputy Chief of Police before finally serving as Head of BIN from 2016 until now.

As head of BIN, Budi Gunawan replaced Sutiyoso on September 9 2016, after going through the Fit & Proper Test process approved by the DPR. His closeness to Megawati has been visible since he was an aide to the former 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia. In 2017-2022, he also served as Central Leader of the Indonesian Mosque Council.
