Farewell to a world champion
Since that Wednesday, March 22, football has one less active world champion. Mesut Özil, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, announced his retirement from football. The footballer, who was born in Germany, but also has Turkish nationality, said goodbye to his professional career through his social networks.
“I have had the privilege of being a professional soccer player for almost 17 years and feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity. But in recent weeks and months, after having suffered some injuries, it has become increasingly clear that it is time to abandon the great stage of football,” his letter began.
The world champion with Germany retires from football
Özil was 34 years old at that time, but due to his constant injuries he had only played four games that season. He did not even finish his contract with Basaksehir, which extended until July 2023.
Six teams, 14 titles
The German midfielder began his career in Schalke 04 in the 2006/07 season. For the next season he continued at Schalke, but in the middle of the season he was transferred to Werder Bremen. In that team he would win his first trophies, the 2009 German Cup and the 2009 German Super Cup (this title is not considered official).
In 2010 he moved on to what was probably his best stage, the Real Madrid. After a great World Cup with Germany in South Africawhere they lost in the semifinals against Spain, the Merengues signed him for five seasons. After finishing his time at the English club, he signed at the beginning of 2021 for the Fenerbahce, a club of which he assured he was always a fan. There he did not achieve championships, but he accumulated 37 games, nine goals and three assists. In that club he could not finish his contract either, he was terminated and again as a free agent he signed for Basaksehir where he ended his career.
Youth and world champion
Özil also had a prolific career representing the German national team. In 2009 he was European Under 21 champion and in 2014 he was crowned world champion in Brazil with the senior team, in a final won in overtime against Argentina. With the senior team, the creative midfielder reached 92 international appearances, with 23 goals and 38 assists.

In 2018 he retired from the German national team amid controversy; he took a photo with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which caused a stir in Germany. Mesut even revealed that he was a victim of racist attacks and uttered an unforgettable phrase: “When I win I am German and when I lose, I am an immigrant.” After the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the midfielder resigned from that country’s national team.
