The legend lives – as an electric car

The fully electric Renault 5 celebrated its premiere at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show as the E-Tech Electric: with an iconic retro design, state-of-the-art technology and the Reno avatar. Info, data, range, price.

  • Two batteries: 40 and 52 kWh, range of up to 400 kilometers

  • Google multimedia system with over 50 apps

  • Price: From 25,000 euros

The very young will no longer know: Renault used to be a really cool brand. And invented new cars that revolutionized automobile construction as futuristic trendsetters. For example, the boxy R4 as an affordable family transporter or the elegant R16 to R30 hatchback sedans with a luxury flair – and the cute, compact R5 as a maneuverable city car. With the new electric edition Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, Renault is now proclaiming nothing less than another – original sound – “Renaulution”.

Renault 5: The ideal city car

When the Renault 5 came onto the market in 1972, it caused a stir with its distinctive design. With its plastic bumpers and brightly painted body, it will be an instant hit with French buyers, especially female and young ones. The ideal second car for the city was born. And the new Renault 5 E-Tech Electric should also be a small, affordable city car – with the avant-garde design, versatility and economy of the original Renault 5.

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is the first vehicle on the new Ampere platform AmpR Small for electric vehicles in the small car segment. At just 3.92 meters long, it lies between the 30 centimeters shorter Twingo and the 9 centimeters longer Clio. The wheelbase of 2.54 meters long promises generous space and a trunk of 326 liters.

In addition, there is a low center of gravity and a low weight of less than 1,500 kilograms, which can add a trailer load of up to 500 kilograms. And the turning circle of 10.3 meters is also extremely suitable for the city.

Pop art in the interior

The two horizontal screens give the interior of the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric a modern, technological and pleasant look. The 10-inch multimedia touchscreen facing the driver transmits all relevant driving information in five different views.

Here, according to the press release, the driving speed is displayed in “colorful alphanumeric characters” instead of the traditional black or white characters. The numbers are therefore made up of individual fragments. There is also a 3D representation of the vehicle on the user interface, which is said to be very realistic and even accurately reproduces the color of the body.

The central multimedia screen measures 10 inches in all versions. In the Techno and Iconic Five equipment lines it is coupled with the OpenR Link system including Google Services. As in the Megane E-Tech Electric, the system offers access to Google Maps, Google Assistant and a variety of apps (50 or more depending on country and version) via the Google Play catalog.

New is the Avatar Reno, which brings artificial intelligence into the car. The avatar should not only be able to answer the 200 most frequently asked questions identified by Renault customer service (e.g. “Hey Reno, how do I connect my phone to the car?” or “Hey Reno, how do I change a tire?”), but also In addition, even in the dialogue, many other questions.

Two batteries, bi-directional charging

There are two different lithium-ion batteries to choose from for the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric. The larger one will be offered at market launch and has a capacity of 52 kWh, which enables a range of up to 400 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. The second variant has a capacity of 40 kWh for a range of up to 300 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. Both use NMC technology (nickel-manganese-cobalt).

The R5 is Renault’s first model to be equipped with the new 11kW bi-directional AC charger. It has both the V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) function for connecting a device to the vehicle battery and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) for feeding electricity back into the grid (see also article on bidirectional charging).

At an 11 kW AC charging station, the 52 kWh battery takes 4.5 hours to charge the battery from 10 to 100 percent. The 40 kWh battery requires an hour less. The Renault does DC fast charging, for example on the motorway, with 80 or 100 kW charging power, depending on the battery size and engine power. In both cases, it should only take 30 minutes to charge the battery from 15 to 80 percent.

Motor with three power levels

The drive of the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is based on the engine of the Megane E-Tech Electric and Scenic E-Tech Electric and is available in three performance levels: with 110 kW/150 hp with a torque of 245 Nm, with 90 kW/120 HP and a torque of 225 Nm as well as with 70 kW/95 HP and a torque of 215 Nm. The 110 kW motor is available in combination with the 52 kWh battery, while the 90 kW and 70 kW motors are combined with the 40 kWh battery. The most powerful engine will be available at market launch, with the other two drive variants following at a later date.

In the 110 kW version, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 8 seconds and from 80 to 120 km/h in less than 7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 150 km/h. That should be enough for a small electric car.

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric naturally has all the important driver assistance systems. These include the intelligent adaptive cruise pilot and Active Driver Assist for level two partially automated driving. The One Box braking system is new: It is intended to halve the reaction time during emergency braking.

Market launch: in autumn 2024

At the market launch, which is planned for the end of 2024, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric will be available with the 52 kWh battery and in two equipment variants. All versions come with 18-inch wheels as standard and feature a 10-inch multimedia touchscreen, hands-free calling, Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility, electric handbrake and full LED headlights with high beam assistant.

The Techno equipment variant offers light alloy wheels, Multi-Sense chassis, reversing camera and the OpenR Link multimedia system with integrated Google as standard. There is also the inductive smartphone charging surface, the charging indicator light on the hood and the adaptive cruise pilot.

The Iconic Five equipment variant also offers two-tone paint, heated seats and steering wheel, front, rear and side parking sensors with Easy Park Assist as well as a variety of design features.

And more than just a gimmick, at least for the French: The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is the first vehicle to be specially equipped for transporting baguettes from the bakery. For this purpose, a wicker basket can be attached to the right of the center console.

Price: From 25,000 euros

Renault is currently promising a starting price of 25,000 euros for the new electric Renault R5 – making it attractive to many groups of buyers. But it’s not just the price that is an argument, but also regional sustainability: the car is not produced in China or India, but completely in France, including the battery pack. The new R5 will replace the electric pioneer Zoe, who is retiring after almost 12 years of construction.
