After a long and hectic day of deliberation, and having as a precedent the surprise resignation of one of the candidates, Amelia Pérez, The 23 judges of the Supreme Court of Justice have just elected Luz Adriana Camargo as the new Attorney General of the Nation.

On March 7, Camargo had managed to rebound and that progress was one of the reasons why the extraordinary session was called todayespecially because the blank vote, which led at the beginning of the year, was no longer as strong.

The official vote was like this: 18 votes for Luz Adriana Camargo, two for Ángela María Buitrago, one for Amelia Pérez and two blank.

She is a graduate of the Universidad de la Sabana. Her role in the electoral contest has been marked by her closeness with the current Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez.

And Camargo worked alongside Velásquez when both were assistant magistrates of the Criminal Cassation chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice and They participated in emblematic investigations against the links between Colombian politics and paramilitarism.

“Camargo Garzón, 59 years old, is a former assistant judge of the Supreme Court of Justice who accompanied the current Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, both in the high court and in the work of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). “, Colprensa reported. During his time in the Court, Camargo also participated in investigations of the so-called Yiddish politics, a network of bribes whose main intermediary was the renowned former congresswoman Yidis Medina.

Among her arguments when she had to present what her Prosecutor’s Office would be, Luz Adriana Camargo argued that They must strengthen victim care routes, improve the participation of prosecutors in trials and prioritize a territorial approach in the treatment of cases.

“Our crime is not homogeneous. We need to have a much closer approach to what is happening in the regions,” she explained.

Camargo said that if she were chosen as a prosecutor, the second most important position in the country, she would rely on technology to reinforce criminal analysis as “a basic element to address criminal phenomena.” Likewise, she would bet on avoiding having individual cases, in order to give way to investigations with grouped complaints and similar elements.

Also, at the time of the presentation before all the magistrates, she reiterated that: “I would like to be remembered because I have acted independently, with autonomy and I have done it with responsibility, with a deep responsibility for the task and a deep respect for people. who make up my work team.”

After this Tuesday’s decision, she is the tenth attorney general of the Nation in the history of the country and the second woman (from a shortlist) to reach this position.
