The CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X and other social media companies testified before the commission Justice of the Senate of the United States on the safety of children on their platforms. The hearing began with recorded testimonies from children and parents who said they or their children were exploited on social media, while the heads of the Big Tech giants ended up in the “defendant’s dock”. Among these also Shou Chewthe CEO of TikTok, who saw the same question insistently repeated several times by one of the senators. “Have you ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party?”, Tim Cotton asked him. He ready the answer: “Senator, I’m from Singapore. No“. To which Senator Cotton, not happy, insisted: “Have you ever been associated or affiliated with the CCP?“. And Chew: “No, senator. Again, I am Singaporean.” An exchange that immediately went viral on social media.
