“There is a false belief that it is a comfortable animal”

Cats are becoming more popular every day and proof of this is that, throughout the year, three International Cat Days are celebrated: February 20, August 8 and October 29, as pointed out by the School of Veterinarians of Seville.

On this occasion, Mrs. Yolanda Herrera Sánchez y Ms. María Victoria Reyero Quesadaboth registered veterinarians at the College of Veterinarians of Seville and specialized in Feline Medicine, talk about the responsibilities that people acquire when They incorporate a feline into the home.

“There is a false belief that it is a comfortable animal,” explains Reyero before adding that a series of obligations must be met, such as the case of microchip identification, vaccination and deworming. In turn, Herrera explains that, “due to the reproductive particularities of this species, it is highly recommended to sterilize them.”since this way we would avoid many unwanted litters that would end up on the street as part of urban colonies.”

On the other hand, “as guardians of these animals, we have to cover all their physical and emotional needs,” Herrera emphasizes. In this sense, the College points out that the veterinarian will always be at the owners’ side to ensure the well-being and health of the pet, thus guaranteeing the health of the entire family.

Furthermore, Reyero highlights that “although it may seem obvious, we cannot treat a cat as we would a dog, and we must respect the peculiarities of each species.” For this reason, “it is of utmost importance that when a cat arrives in our home, we always put ourselves in the hands of veterinary professionals specialized in feline medicine, and go to approved veterinary centers where they will give us the best advice for its health and socialization.” , concludes Herrera.
