What’s next – is there anything else? Since the comparatively low success of Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker, things have become rather quiet around Star Wars. Various series came and went, some were good, some less so, but we no longer heard anything about films or even a new trilogy. On the contrary, films that had already been announced, such as Patty Jenkins’ film about Rogue Squadron, were suddenly on hold or completely canceled. At the end of 2023 / beginning of 2024, there was suddenly some movement in the Star Wars franchise again, not least thanks to creative director Dave Filoni, whose series are successes across the board. There are even a few films planned again, although not yet in 2024. But all the projects have one thing in common: if they don’t directly bear Dave Filoni’s signature, then he at least influenced them. Because when it comes to Star Wars, no one can ignore the creator of Rebels, Ahsoka and several other series.

But 2024 will initially be a pure series year. Star Wars doesn’t take any big steps forward in the timeline, but instead it takes up a time period that has so far only been known from comics and books: the High Republic.

The Bad Batch, Staffel 3: The grand finale awaits this crew of resilient clone troopers as they wage their own battle against the Empire and ancient enemies. In the finale, it’s not just about whether the troop can free the young clone Omega from the clutches of the Empire, they also meet an old acquaintance who was thought dead: Asajj Ventress, a former student of none other than Count Dooku.
The Acolyte: Perhaps the most exciting project this year comes in the form of Star War: The Acolyte. The series is set to take place during the High Republic, a good 200 years before the Clone Wars. This time the focus of the series is also on the followers of the dark side of the force, namely the Sith. Among other things, fans hope that The Acolyte will answer the question of how Darth Sidious actually received the power of the Sith.
Skeleton Crew: What is known about this series is that it is aimed at a younger audience and is about a group of children who are stranded in their ship in the void of space. On their way back home they are accompanied by a Jedi Knight played by Jude Law. Similar to The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew is set to take place between the end of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Tales of the Jedi, Staffel 2: Finally, there will also be a second season of the animated series Tales of the Jedi. In the first season, viewers not only got a glimpse of the time right before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but also more information about Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. It is not yet clear whether their stories will be followed further in season 2.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Andor and more
A number of projects have also been announced for the coming years, which not only the fans are eagerly awaiting.
Andor: Staffel 2: The second and final season of the series Andor does not yet have a specific start date. It is supposedly scheduled to appear on Disney+ in 2025 and will then have to follow in powerful footsteps. Because Andor is not only considered one of the most popular Star Wars series, but also the best. Source: Disney Star Wars: The second season of Andor will probably come in 2025. Maybe because it doesn’t show the big fight for the galaxy, but rather the small rebellions and the many shades of gray that they can have. Nothing is yet known about the content of the season.
The Mandalorian and Grogu: The film The Mandalorian and Grogu is supposed to conclude the adventures surrounding Din Djarin and Grogu. But that doesn’t seem to be Dave Filoni’s announced Star Wars film yet, as Jon Favreau is in the director’s chair for The Mandalorian and Grogu. But nothing more is known yet, including when exactly the film will be released in cinemas.
In addition to these specific projects, there are of course a whole series of films of which nothing more is known than that they are being made: Taika Waititi is supposed to make a Star Wars film, and there is also a project by Dave Filoni himself and a film about Rey Skywalker. There is also the film Dawn of the Jedi, which is supposed to show the beginnings of the Jedi Knights, the second season of Ahsoka and the fourth season of The Mandalorian.
Star Wars: Thrawn and the Future of the Star Wars Universe
A popular theory as to what all the projects are headed for: At least some of the upcoming series and films will roughly recreate the plot of the famous Thrawn trilogy from the old Expanded Universe. Dave Filoni has prepared the preparations for this in his Source: Lucasfilm Star Wars: What happens next for Rey? A new film aims to answer this question. previous series. An idea floating around in fan circles is that the Star Wars film he is supposed to make himself is supposed to be the conclusion of all his series projects and the villain who unites the heroes once again is none other than Thrawn.
And there is already speculation for the time after episode 9. A film about Rey Skywalker and her new Jedi Academy is supposed to take place at this time. In the old Expanded Universe, the students of this academy – then led by Luke Skywalker – encountered a threat from outside the galaxy, the Yuzaang Vong. They were a highly developed species that wanted to conquer the Star Wars galaxy and were immune to the Force. However, it is unlikely that they will make it into the current Star Wars universe. Because there are now opponents who fit the Star Wars universe much better, such as the Rakata from Knights of the Old Republic, who used similar star maps to those from Ahsoka. Another possibility would be that the Mortis gods play an important role. These three incarnations of the Force have already been mentioned in Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels and Ahsoka. No matter which of these options is chosen in the end, it currently looks as if the Star Wars universe will bear Dave Filoni’s signature at least in the coming years.
