Wang Yi meets with Sullivan, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs of the United States

On January 26 and 27, 2024, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, met with Sullivan, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs of the United States, in Bangkok. The discussions were centered around implementing the consensus reached by the two countries’ leaders and addressing important and sensitive issues in China-US relations.

Wang Yi emphasized the importance of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, urging both sides to treat each other with respect and work towards a peaceful coexistence. He also reiterated China’s stance on the Taiwan issue, emphasizing that Taiwan is a part of China and elections in Taiwan cannot change this fundamental fact. Wang Yi urged the United States to abide by the one-China principle and support China’s peaceful reunification.

The two sides also discussed the boundaries between national security and economic activities, agreeing to further discussions on this matter in the future. Additionally, they agreed to implement the “San Francisco Vision,” which includes maintaining regular contact between the two heads of state, promoting exchanges in various fields, and expanding people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Furthermore, the discussions covered international and regional issues such as the Middle East, Ukraine, the Korean Peninsula, and the South China Sea.

The meetings were described as candid, substantive, and fruitful, indicating a positive step towards improving and maintaining a stable relationship between China and the United States.
