The legend of Yugoslav, Croatian and European basketball, Dražen Petrović, died in June 1993 in a traffic accident in Germany. The vehicle was driven by his girlfriend at the time, Klara, and the former Turkish basketball player Hilal Edebal sat behind them. The accident happened around 5:20 p.m., when a Volkswagen Golf car hit a truck on the highway near Ingolstadt.
It was established that visibility was very poor, and Dražen died instantly, from severe head injuries. He was asleep at the time of the impact, and then fell out of the vehicle due to the force of the crash. His girlfriend Klara drove 180 kilometers per hour and after the accident returned to modeling and basketball, while the Turkish basketball player suffered much more serious injuries, fell into a coma and has had consequences for decades, holes in her memory…
In an interview with a Turkish television, she remembered the circumstances that led to the accident, although she regrets that she does not remember anything that happened then.
“It was long before the accident, I met her when we were young, we played basketball, we were friends. We started at the age of 11 and played all those years together. After that, I left the country, went to America to study, we kept in touch a little bit. We met again in Germany, that day before the accident we picked up Drazen from the airport. It’s a shame I should remember it, but I can’t. He was a great basketball player, but that part of my brain doesn’t remember anything at allHilal said.

“I remember sitting in the back seat, that’s what they wrote in the reports. Klara was driving too fast, but we were the only car and we hit the truck directly. No one was wearing a seat belt. I heard that Dražen flew out of the car through the windshield and I heard that he stayed there dead, and I fell into a coma and was in it for a very, very long time“.
“They told me that she visited me several times after the accident in the hospital. When I woke up, she came to see me several times, but suddenly she disappeared. Dražen was a big star in his country and some people said that Klara wanted to kill him. It was her fault, yes, but she didn’t want to kill him. She loved him, she wanted them to get married.“
“I’ve had a very difficult journey,” she said. Her problems have been going on for years, she has huge gaps in her memory.
“My mother came to the hospital non-stop because I was in a coma, she asked if I would survive, if I would be the same as before. The doctors told her that I would wake up because I had a healthy body, because I was a basketball player, but that they couldn’t know anything else..”
Turkish media organized a meeting between Dražen’s mother Biserka Petrović and the Turkish basketball player.
“I would like to talk to her about Dražen for days, and I have an even greater desire to come to Istanbul and meet the basketball player who was in the car when he died. I wish he would tell me what Dražen’s last words were“, she said, and the meeting was very emotional.

“I’m really happy to meet her, I just hope she doesn’t expect too much, because I really don’t remember anything,” said the Turkish woman. After the meeting and the tears, Biserka Petrović admitted: “I’m happy that I met her, because she was the last to see Dražen.”
