U.S. Appointment of New Supreme Representative to Taiwan Ambassador to Beijing Still Vacant

[New Tang Dynasty Beijing time July 07, 2021]The Biden administration continued to strengthen relations with Taipei. On Tuesday (6th), the United States appointed a new top representative for Taiwan affairs.

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) issued a statement on Tuesday that Sandra Odkirk, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, will serve as Director of the Taipei Office of the American Institute in Taiwan. She will be the first woman to lead the American Association in Taiwan. In the absence of formal official relations, Sun Xiaoya is the de facto American ambassador.

Sun Xiaoya’s appointment comes at a time when Taiwan’s relations with the United States and China are undergoing major changes, and the pace of the Biden administration’s appointment of a special envoy to Beijing is very slow, and the position is still vacant. Washington is working hard to strengthen its semi-official relations with Taipei in the commercial and cultural fields. The two sides already have strong cooperation in the field of national defense, working together to make the increasingly arrogant CCP retreat.

Former AIT Kaohsiung Branch Director, Chris Castro, said that one of the most important things Sun Xiaoya needs is confidence, confidence in the importance of Taiwan’s overall strategy and the value of Taiwan as a global democratic standard.

“What’s really important now is that the new director is determined to meet this moment.” Before the appointment was announced on Tuesday, Kang Shengru said in an email that given the Chinese Communist Party’s aggression against Taiwan and its hostility to Taiwan’s democratically elected government, now It can’t be business as usual anymore.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated Sun Xiaoya in a tweet on Wednesday.

Although the United States has now appointed its top representative to Taiwan, there has been no ambassador to Beijing since Terry Branstad left office in October last year.

The CCP has always claimed that Taiwan is part of its territory and has opposed any official relations or negotiations between Taipei and other governments. Under the leadership of former US President Trump (Trump), Washington has launched a stronger counterattack against the CCP’s attempt to unify Taiwan. The United States sent several senior officials to Taiwan and signed an agreement to sell 66 F-16 fighter jets. This is the first time the United States has sold advanced fighter jets to the island since George HW Bush’s presidency in 1992.

The Biden administration continues to implement its predecessor’s Taiwan policy and strengthen relations with Taiwan. Last month, Washington restarted trade and investment negotiations with Taipei that had been stalled for five years. It is widely believed that this is the first step towards a potential bilateral trade agreement between the two parties.
