The US government has compiled a list of nearly a hundred Russian-owned linkable aircraft. Providing any form of service to these aircraft anywhere in the world without authorization can result in hefty fines and potential prison sentences. The ban also applies on Russian territory.
The list published by the Department of Commerce identifies commercial and private planes that violate US sanctions on Russia. The list includes aircraft operated by Russian airlines, including Aeroflot. These are mostly Boeing aircraft. Also included in the list is the Gulfstream private jet owned by oligarch Roman Abramovich.
The oligarch, owner of the Chelsea football club, has already been hit by heavy sanctions from Great Britain for his close ties to Vladimir Putin. “The refueling, maintenance or repair, as well as the supply of spare parts to any of the listed aircraft, will be considered a violation of the US export rules”, explained the Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, stressing that the measure is a response to the “brutal war decided by Russia against Ukraine”.
