The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Philippe Grandi said: “The Convention still protects the rights of refugees around the world.” “This Convention has saved millions of lives. On the 70th anniversary of the Convention’s adoption, the international community’s Defending the principles of the Convention is of utmost importance.”
The UN Refugee Agency pointed out that some governments have recently tried to ignore or circumvent the principles of the Convention, expelling and boycotting refugees and asylum-seekers on land and coastlines, and proposed forcibly transferring them to a third country without proper protection measures. Regarding the above situation, Grandi expressed concern.
On the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on the Status of Refugees in 1951, Grandi said that the treaty is an important part of international human rights law and is as important as it was when it was drafted and negotiated. He said: “The convention’s statement on the rights of refugees is clear, and it still applies in the face of unprecedented challenges and emergencies, such as the new crown pneumonia epidemic.”
The 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees and the recent Global Compact on Refugees both call for international cooperation to find a series of solutions to the refugee problem. Grandi emphasized that the international community must adhere to the important principles of refugee protection stipulated in the Convention, including the right of those fleeing persecution not to be returned to a hazardous or dangerous situation.
