US President Joe Biden issued the statement on Thursday an executive order to impose sanctions against four Israeli settlers in the West Bank, a territory that Israel has occupied since 1967 but which the vast majority of the international community believes belongs to the Palestinians, who partly govern it. Persons subject to sanctions will not be able to carry out economic transactions of any kind in the United States or receive a visa to enter the country.
The settlers are the inhabitants of the “colonies”, that is, settlements in Palestinian territory of Israeli citizens considered illegal by much of the international community. Their presence causes frequent clashes, even very violent ones, with the Palestinian inhabitants of the West Bank. After the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip they became more serious and frequent. The settlers sanctioned by Biden had been involved in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank or in attempts to destroy their property.
