Instead, the victim’s family and activists for the rights of African Americans were outraged. The boy’s mom, Katie Wright, said: “Kim Potter murdered my son, today the justice system killed him again.” Speaking before the sentence, in tears, she had said that she could never forgive Potter for what he had taken away from her, sometimes directing her comments directly to the former policewoman.
“I am very sorry for hurting you so much. My heart is broken and devastated for all of you,” Potter said apologizing to the family. Paul Engh, one of his lawyers, had emphasized this remorse, labeling the shot as an “involuntary crime”. In asking for clemency, he had quoted an apology from him along with his 26 years without complaints in the police force. But the boy’s family never believed his apology.

The murder of Daunte Wright occurred as Derek Chauvin was being tried for the murder of George Floyd – African American suffocated by former policeman during an arrest in May 2020 – in Minneapolis, igniting protests on the streets of the city. A year later, Wright was stopped by police for illegally hanging deodorant from his mirror and expired vehicle registration card. But stopping him, the police spotted a suspended arrest warrant, when Potter and an apprentice attempted to arrest him Wright tried to get away. “Taser, Taser, Taser”, Potter is heard screaming from the video recording on the former policewoman’s uniform before shooting the boy.
