World War without men by admin April 25, 2022 April 25, 2022 142 world without humans. I thought of ancient fables – Aesop, Phaedrus – in which animals are the only protagonists. I thought of La Fontaine, of the assembly of rats that live in peace and abundance until the day when the tragedy manifests itself by incarnating in a big, fat cat. The surviving rats gather, taking advantage of the enemy’s absence. “Agile and silent as he is, we find him behind us without realizing it and we end up right in his clutches. But, if we heard him coming, things would be different”. The assembly does not reach any shared conclusion. And anguish makes everyone’s paws tremble. Those dogs barking on the broken bridge, those lifeless horses at the edge of the damp road, the geese crossing the road as bombs fall around it all lead to the same conclusion as the assembly of rats in La Fontaine’s tale: no lair is truly safe.
