What is a flat white? The coffee drink that Google pays tribute to in its doodle

When a person enters the Google page, they have surely seen, depending on the day, that their doodle pays tribute to certain aspects, such as when it is Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day.

On March 11, the image of a cup of coffee appeared in this doodle and many are wondering why it is.

Well, it is the flat white, a drink that became popular in specialized coffee shops and has its origins in Australia.

This is prepared with a base of espresso coffee and steamed milk with foam.

This differs from other coffee drinks such as cappuccino, due to the way in which the milk is prepared, since what is sought is that it has a smooth texture so that none of the ingredients are overshadowed by the other.

However, the main feature compared to cappuccino is that the milk and its foam layer turn out to be thinner.

Likewise, when this preparation is served it also differs from others, since it is made in a small 150 ml cup.

The thin layer of foam that has a creamier texture than other preparations is what gives this cup of coffee its name.

According to the specialized portal ‘Cafés Candelas’, the flat white can be prepared with two shots of espresso that add up to 150 ml and a thin layer of slightly emulsified milk.

If you want to prepare it at home, it is also possible to do so according to the ‘Cafés Criollos’ portal, as follows:

Ingredients :

  • Coffee beans: preferably of an origin and roast that is to your taste.
  • Water: filtered to obtain a clean espresso free of impurities or additional flavors.
  • Whole milk: It is important to achieve a creamy texture and a soft foam when steaming.
  • Sugar (optional): Some people prefer to add a touch of sweetness to their flat white.
  • Vanilla syrup (optional): for those who want to add an aromatic and different touch to their drink.

Preparation:

  • Grind the coffee beans: make sure the grind is fine, similar to table salt.
  • Prepare the espresso: Use an espresso machine and extract about 30 ml for a single or 60 ml for a double.
  • Steam the milk: select the milk and insert the frother into the cold milk, trying to create a smooth, velvety texture, without large bubbles. The ideal milk temperature should be around 60-65°C to maintain its natural sweetness.
  • Mix: Pour the espresso into your cup, then add the steamed milk. The ideal proportion is 1:2 (one part of coffee for every two parts of milk).
  • Latte art (optional): If you like, you can try making a simple design with the milk as you pour it, such as a heart or rosette.
  • Add additives (optional): if you prefer to give it a sweet touch, add sugar or sweetener. You can even add a few drops of vanilla syrup.
