After the White House announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, some democracies followed suit. The Republic of China Taiwan’s attitude towards the Beijing Winter Olympics is still uncommitted. Some scholars believe that this is Taiwan’s “sadness”. Some scholars also believe that the CCP would not allow Taiwan to send officials, so there is no question of whether to consider “diplomatic boycott.”

The Beijing Winter Olympics will begin on February 4 next year. At present, in addition to the “Five Eyes Alliance” member states following the US “diplomatic boycott”, it has been reported that countries such as France, Germany and Japan may not send ministerial officials to attend.

Japan’s Sankei Shimbun’s Taipei branch director Akio Yaita mentioned that in the boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, Lithuania and the United States were the first to raise their hands in the world. Now I am still looking around, undecided. The global “Boycott of the Winter Olympics” action has indeed put a lot of pressure on Xi Jinping.

Taiwan, which has always been intimidated by Beijing’s cultural attacks and military attacks, has always been the focus of attention from the outside world with regard to the Beijing Winter Olympics. Akio Yaita believes that this makes people see two “sads” in Taiwan.

Akio Yaita said that Taiwan’s “power of the times” submitted a “resolving resolution” to the Legislative Yuan in November, but it is still being coordinated. He thinks that the Cai government may not want to over-stimulate China (the CCP). Because Beijing has just poached Nicaragua, a diplomatic country with Taiwan and Central America. Beijing has never considered Taiwan’s feelings, but Taiwan must be cautious in everything. If you are afraid of moving, you will be blamed. He thinks this is Taiwan’s “sorrow.”

Since parliamentary resolutions generally have to be unanimously passed to be effective, Akio Yaita believes that it is difficult for the KMT to support a boycott of the Winter Olympics. He wondered why as many as 80% to 90% of the people in Japan, the United States, Europe and other countries dislike China (the CCP), but Taiwan, which is most bullied by China (the CCP), still has at least 3 adults who like China. (The Chinese Communist Party). He said, “Taiwan is one of the most pro-China countries in the world.” This is nothing more than another kind of “sorrow” for Taiwan.

Professor Fan Shiping from the Political Research Institute of Taiwan Normal University said in an interview with Voice of Hope that he did not hold the same view. He believes that for Taiwan, whether to boycott the Winter Olympics is not a problem. The Tsai government actually did not regard it as a big issue, because the current cross-strait relations have ceased to interact with each other, and official interactions have also ceased. ! So basically it is not a problem.

Furthermore, Fan Shiping said, in fact, Taiwan does not need to be so clear about “boycotting the Winter Olympics.” Because when Taiwan expresses it, it may attract cynicism from China (the CCP), and it may say that we did not invite you in the first place, just like what we said to the United States. Therefore, if Taiwan expresses its boycott of the Winter Olympics like other countries, it will only allow China (the CCP) to use it as an operational issue. Therefore, the Taiwan government has not specifically stated that it is a correct response to this hot issue.

As for more and more countries boycotting the Winter Olympics, when all countries are collectively absent, will the Chinese Communist leader Xi Jinping be embarrassed by this? Fan Shiping believes that for China (the Chinese Communist Party), he is mainly engaged in propaganda. In addition, the main focus of such Olympic events is athletes, so the Chinese people may be more concerned about the opening ceremony or the results of the Olympic games.

Finally, Fan Shiping specifically mentioned that a new Cold War pattern of confrontation between the United States and China has emerged in the entire world. The United States calls on its allies to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics, and the CCP will go to his friends and leaders in Asia, Africa and Latin America to participate in the Winter Olympics. Even if the countries that Beijing is looking for may all be in Africa and have not seen snow in a lifetime, it doesn’t matter.

It is currently known that the leaders of Russia’s Putin and South Korea’s Moon Jae-in will attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. Fan Shiping said that the CCP can at least find leaders of 20 or 30 countries to attend the opening ceremony, so he does not expect the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics to be affected by these boycotts.
