Cei, Bassetti: “Serious concern over a referendum on euthanasia”

“The prospect of a referendum to decriminalize the murder of the consenting is a cause for serious concern.” In his Introduction to the work of the autumn session of the Permanent Episcopal Council, Cei President Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti addresses the issue of the referendum on euthanasia. «Authoritative jurists have highlighted serious problems of constitutional compatibility in the question for which the signatures were collected and in the consequences that a possible repeal would determine in the legal system».

«Without wishing to enter into the important juridical questions involved, it is necessary to reiterate that there is no expression of compassion in helping to die, but the prevalence of an anthropological and nihilistic conception in which neither hope nor interpersonal relationships find more space. There is a striking contradiction between the solidarity mobilization, which has seen an entire country take action against a death-carrying virus, and an initiative which, regardless of the intentions of the individual signatories of the referendum request, proposes a solution that represents a defeat of the ‘human. Those who suffer must be accompanied and helped to find reasons for living; it is necessary to ask for the application of the law on palliative care and pain therapy ».
