The term rare defines a disease that affects a small number of people and, unfortunately, there are thousands of them. The number of known and diagnosed rare diseases fluctuates between 7,000 and 8,000, but they are also growing due to new research. According to the data, in Italy, 20 cases are estimated for every 10,000 inhabitants, and every year there are about many new cases reported by health facilities.
Many of them are of genetic origin, others autoimmune or caused by infections. Scientific knowledge is still scarce, and for the majority there are no effective treatments, but only treatments that improve the quality of life. The Istituto Superiore della Sanità has identified a list of rare diseases for exemption from the ticket. Just as illustrated in the article 2021 Ticket Exemption without ISEE for these diseases recognized by INPS.
It can happen, when faced with certain initial symptoms, to arrive at a cheating diagnosis or when the symptoms become severe. An example? Burning and intimate pain can indicate the onset of this disturbing, disabling physical condition. Initial symptoms, such as the urge to urinate and pain when urinating, can initially suggest classic cystitis. However, a thorough investigation could reveal interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome) which, unlike cystitis, occurs in the absence of bacterial load. Since 2001 this syndrome has been recognized as a Rare Disease by a Ministerial Decree.
Burning and intimate pain can indicate the onset of this disturbing, disabling physical condition
This disease is a chronic condition that occurs without a bacterial infection. It causes severe pain localized in different locations such as the urethra, bladder, perineum and sometimes spreads to the abdomen and legs. The pain can be intermittent or constant, so much so that it also compromises social and emotional life. This condition can affect both men and women at any age, although it is more common in the latter. It has a slow evolution but progressively worsens.
The causes of this condition are still unclear, it is assumed that surgery or a viral disease may contribute. The most accredited hypothesis is that concerning the thinning of the bladder walls which act as protection. Due to this thinning, the irritants present in the urine attack the walls causing inflammation.
It is very important to recognize it in time, to avoid even serious consequences. However, the diagnosis may come after some time, as the symptoms are often linked to other disorders. Thanks to ongoing research, innovative and targeted treatments have been developed that can help better cope with this condition. The therapies may involve the oral intake of drugs, or intravesical with the instillation of solutions based on hyaluronic acid and coindroitin sulfate.
