In 2015, he was re-elected as the Secretary of the Nanchang Municipal Party Committee of the Communist Party of China. During his tenure in Nanchang, Gong Jianhua participated in the persecution of local Falun Gong practitioners. He was responsible for the persecution and death of many Falun Gong practitioners such as Lan Hu and Liu Leima.
