Businesses, the birth rate is at pre covid levels

The data of the business demography that in 2020 had seen anomalous values compared to the historical trends due to the bloodiest phase of the pandemic, in 2021 returned to relative normality with regard to registrations while a decisive anomaly remains with regard to cancellations for which there is a marked weakness contrary to expectations. The number of terminations reached 246,009 nationally, which is equivalent to 27,000 fewer cancellations than in 2020 and even 80,000 fewer than in 2019. These trends are also manifested in the North-West, albeit to a lesser extent with a decrease of 9% between 2020 and 2021 compared to the national average of -12.1%. These amounts appear to be decidedly anomalous with respect to expectations and therefore it seems necessary to wait a little longer before making definitive judgments on the impact that the pandemic has had on business closure. The results on enrollment flows appear to be more robust, which have returned roughly to the levels of 2019. In particular, in the North-West, 2021 ended with a total of 33,881 enrollments, i.e. 17.2% more than in 2020. The transformation of these absolute numbers into relative values necessary to compare the performances achieved by the territories highlights a rather flattering picture for the North-West thanks to the driving role played by Piedmont which with a value of 5.85 registrations per 100 registered at the beginning period (so-called birth rate) scores the second best performance among the Italian regions compared to 5.65 for the area as a whole and 5.47 for the entire country. The results of the other two regions of the area were instead below the national average, with the Aosta Valley being the least performing region of the North-West. The business world of the North-West has historically been characterized by the scarce presence of companies set up in the form of joint stock companies and this trend is also repeated in 2021. The birth rate calculated only on this subset sees on the one hand the confirmation of a better performance in the area compared to the national average but on the other hand highlights a downsizing of Piedmont which ranks fourth in terms of birth rate with Valle d’Aosta which is even the least performing Italian region. However, this group of companies can boast of a good state of health, as evidenced by the share of capital companies that have to face insolvency proceedings, dissolution or liquidation Only 12.1% of the capital companies of the North-West are found in this state and from this point of view, the decidedly more positive picture comes from the smaller region of the area which boasts a share capital company rate of less than 8% which is equal in the country only in the two autonomous provinces
of Bolzano and Trento.
