There are currently large price differences when it comes to refueling between the German federal states. For diesel fuel, the difference between the most expensive and cheapest federal states is 8.8 cents, and for gasoline it is 8.7 cents. This is shown by the current ADAC evaluation of fuel prices in the 16 federal states. The most expensive federal states for gasoline drivers are Hamburg and Hesse, and for diesel drivers Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Both fuels are cheapest in Saarland.
Four eastern German federal states are currently at the bottom when it comes to diesel: the most expensive federal state, Saxony, with an average of 1.747 euros per liter, is followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. The most expensive federal state for gasoline is Hamburg with 1,774 euros per liter of Super E10, followed by Hesse and several eastern German federal states.
The people of Saarland are currently the cheapest for both petrol and diesel. A liter of Super E10 costs an average of 1,687 euros in the smallest German country, and a liter of diesel costs 1,659 euros. The second cheapest federal state for gasoline is Berlin, while Rhineland-Palatinate comes in second place for diesel. What is striking is that Saarland was among the most expensive federal states for gasoline in the previous month. Bavaria was one of the more expensive diesel federal states in the December evaluation and now occupies a place in the top third of the ranking. A look back at the past year also shows that there are always changes in the top and bottom and no federal state stands out particularly positively or negatively.
For today’s investigation, the ADAC evaluated the price data from more than 14,000 gas stations recorded by the Market Transparency Office for Fuels and assigned them to the 16 federal states. The prices determined represent a snapshot from today, 11 a.m.
According to the ADAC’s recommendation, price-conscious drivers should consistently use all opportunities to fill up more cheaply. This increases competition in the fuel market and ultimately benefits consumers. This includes using comparatively inexpensive gas stations at convenient refueling times. As a rule, the best time of day for this is between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. The “ADAC Drive” smartphone app offers uncomplicated and quick help.
