The new Ferrari 296 GTB is a reality. The long-awaited “baby Ferrari” has finally shown itself to the general public, combined with a long list of innovations starting from the V6 plug-in hybrid engine with a total power of 830 horsepower. The new mid-rear-engined 2-seater sports berlinetta is powered by the 663 horsepower 120-degree V6 turbo coupled to an electric motor capable of delivering an additional 122 kW (167 hp). This is the first 6-cylinder in history for a road car produced by Ferrari. Capable of exceeding 330 km / h and sprinting from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 seconds, by setting the lever eDrive can travel up to 25 km in electric.
New Ferrari 296 GTB, the origins of the name
Goodbye Ferrari Dino, at least for now. The historic name has not been taken up due to the novelty of the Cavallino. The 296 GTB abbreviation combines total displacement (2,992 l) and number of cylinders, followed by the abbreviation GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta). The new V6 engine thus becomes a key component of the future Ferrari range and brings the mind back to the past. After all, the first Ferrari equipped with a V6 (then in a 65 ° configuration and a total displacement of 1500 cm3) dates back to 1957 and is the Dino 156 F2 single-seater. In the following year, two other V6s with increased displacement were presented on some front-engined Sport Prototypes, the 196 S and 296 S, as well as on the Formula 1 single-seater that in 1958 led Mike Hawthorn to victory in the Drivers’ title of the World Championship. Ferrari 296 GTB, style and size
The design of the 296 GTB stems from the desire of the designers of the Ferrari Style Center to redefine the concept of a rear-mid-engine berlinetta, giving the car a compact, modern and original line. Thanks to the short wheelbase, it represents the most compact berlinetta of the Maranello company of the last decade. The typical fastback setting was abandoned to focus on a passenger compartment that was set in a powerful volume, the result of the short wheelbase and the composition of elements such as the muscular fenders, the visor roof, the flying buttresses and the unprecedented vertical rear window. From these forms derives a predominant passenger compartment in the overall perception of the car. One of the innovative elements of the 296 GTB is the passenger compartment which stands out from other Ferrari sports cars due to its visor architecture. The theme, already tested on some limited edition cars such as the J50 and on One-Off such as the P80 / C. Another feature of the 296 GTB is the truncated tail, a surface machined from solid that enhances the compactness of the volumes. At the top, the transom incorporates a horizontal element that encloses integrated lights and spoiler. With the lights off, the effect is a black screen that runs horizontally across the bumper; turning on the projectors illuminate two strips of light at the ends. To complete the perception of the traditional double round light, two scratches have been introduced that accommodate the other light functions in the lower part. As for the dimensions, the 296 GTB is 4565mm long, 1958mm wide, 1187mm high and with a wheelbase of 2600mm. The dry weight is 1470 kg.
Interior
The cabin of the 296 GTB develops around the completely digital interface introduced on the SF90 Stradale, with a characterization more devoted to elegance.
When switched on, the 296 GTB displays a digital interface. As on the SF90 Stradale, a selector for the management of energy flows called eManettino was installed on the 296 GTB alongside the traditional Manettino for vehicle dynamics controls. The eManettino includes four operating modes that can be selected via steering wheel controls.
