According to a media report, gas consumption in Germany rose by 4.2 percent in the winter half of the year compared to the previous year. The increase is due to industry, which consumed 8.2 percent more gas, as the newspapers of the Funke media group reported, citing the Federal Network Agency. Households and businesses, however, saved 0.1 percent.
Milder temperatures also dampened gas consumption in the winter of 2023/24. Between October and March it was on average 0.6 degrees warmer than the previous year.

Compared to the pre-crisis years 2018 to 2021, gas consumption fell by a total of 16.5 percent. Households and businesses recorded a decline of 18.3 percent, and industry by 14.7 percent.
“Many people are more conscious about their heating”
“Spring is coming and Germany has mastered another winter without bottlenecks in the gas supply,” said the head of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, to the Funke newspapers. The savings successes are considerable. “Many people are more conscious about their heating.”

But the gas crisis is not over yet, warned Müller. Uncertainties remained in the next winter too. There is still a risk that Russia will stop the remaining gas deliveries to Europe. Even a very cold winter would cause gas consumption to rise sharply. “So we have to continue to be vigilant,” emphasized the network agency president.
