A luxury resort in the castle and medieval village in the heart of Umbria. The works, which are worth about 150 million euros, have already begun and the opening of the Antognolla resort and Residences is scheduled for 2023. A focus on Umbria, and on the 18th century estate located about twenty kilometers from Perugia and 20 minutes from the airport is Six Senses, a group specialized in the hospitality sector, which operates 18 hotels and resorts and 30 spas in 21 countries.

The project involves the renovation of the medieval estate of Antognolla dating back to the 12th century, the restoration of the crypt and the 6th century frescoes, the historic chapel from the time of St. Francis of Assisi and the conversion into a 107-room luxury hotel and the creation of more than 70 private residences. The works have already started and some abandoned buildings have already been demolished and will be replaced by structures «with a contemporary design, much more in line with the peculiarities of the landscape and less intrusive». On the field, together with the Antognolla team, also the technicians and experts of the contractor Sacaim. “When we talk about Antognolla Resort and Residences – says Luca Aiwerioghene – Senior Construction Manager of Antognolla – we must think that we are referring to the largest development project in Umbria linked to the hospitality sector, which is currently worth only 4% of the added economic value of the region”.

A choice, that of focusing on the center of Umbria, also dictated by the strategic position. The resort is located 20 kilometers north of Perugia, near the regional border with Tuscany, 25 minutes from the international airport of Umbria, close to Gubbio and Assisi and less than 2 hours from Florence.

«Umbria will have another chance to improve its positioning in the tourism sector – adds the manager -. Finally, the project will implement golf tourism in the region by making Umbria an attractive destination for golf enthusiasts, which is of particular importance in light of the Ryder Cup in 2023 ». The strength of the intervention carried out is sustainability and attention to “everything that is local: from culture to traditions”.

“More than 75% of all waste from the demolition and construction phase will be recovered for reuse and if the materials are not usable they will be removed from the site and disposed of appropriately – argues the manager -. The resort includes several historic buildings that have been carefully preserved and will be restored to their former glory: the Castle, the Old Town and the estate will be rebuilt with a sustainable approach, thus adding environmental benefits to the entire property. The Castle is a 12th century structure, and once completed, it aims to be the first structure in Italy with the US Green Building Council’s Leed certification, demonstrating its leadership in energy efficiency and environmental construction techniques ». As for the repercussions on the territory, 900 jobs are estimated with the interventions for the construction and maintenance of the structure: “300 direct and 600 indirect through the involvement of a large number of local contractors and suppliers”. No less important is the energy factor linked to the design of heating and cooling systems, the roofing of buildings and lighting “to ensure the lowest possible consumption”. And again in the context of circular economy and sustainability, another intervention: “All rainwater will be collected and retained on site to be used in the irrigation of the natural landscape”. The construction of a center of culinary excellence is also in the pipeline. “Over time, herbs and vegetables will be grown on site as well as some livestock to ensure that fresh, local and organic ingredients are introduced into the restaurant’s dishes. All food waste will be composted, and the compost will be used for the chef’s garden and for other initiatives such as the organic garden and for herbs dedicated to spa treatments ».
