I port they had promised that any operator wishing to enter the port could do so without blockades or picketing, and they kept their word.
It is a peaceful demonstration that is taking place in front of gate 4 of the port of Trieste, collector for container loading and unloading operations and a strategic point for anyone with the aim of paralyzing the activity of the airport. The confirmation comes from the presence, very sparse, by the police.
More busy the Municipal police, to whom, with the assistance ofAnas during the morning of October 15, the task of diverting the traffic of heavy vehicles from the access ramp to gate 4 to direct them towards another less guarded entrance was carried out: a one-time operation and avoiding dangerous truck gymkans in a crowded square.
The position of the dockers
“On October 14th we met in the assembly – underlines Stefano Puzzer, spokesperson for the Trieste Port Workers Coordination -. Today, October 15, we are all on strike, so we said to ourselves, guaranteeing freedom for those who want to work. We are here until the government gives us answers ”. Its trade union acronym collects over 400 of the approximately 950 “camalli” of the Julian airport and has threatened an all-out strike to block a strategic infrastructure also for freight traffic directed to Central Europe.
In the middle of the morning, the initiative is partially successful. In fact, about a hundred workers entered the airport without problems at gate 4, but no more than a couple of thousand adherents to an event deemed illegitimate by the Guarantee fee the implementation of the law on strikes in essential public services and, therefore, at risk of reporting: “Whoever goes on strike commits a crime”, the prefect of Trieste Valerio Valenti warned yesterday.
Participants in the protest
In the statements of October 14th there was talk of 50 thousand people potentially in the square, also coming from other parts of Italy, but right now the numbers seem to reduce the perimeter of the protest.
Full center, however, in terms of image: the massive coverage guaranteed by the media is offering the event the expected resonance. On the other hand, the impact of the protest on the activity of the port will be assessed at the end of the day. In the middle of the morning, if the handling of containers, in the absence of ships, was stopped, the ro-ro traffic did not appear paralyzed, with trucks lined up waiting to embark for the Turkey at the entrance of the other large passage on the Riva Traiana, little or no manned by port workers in protest.
In the final accounting, however, it must be taken into account that the media tam tam unleashed in recent days had already led important foreign companies to take other routes: a damage whose extent will have to be evaluated in the medium term.
