Inter, Frattesi-Verona and Arnautovic-Genoa: goals to be cancelled. The refereeing leaders say so
The controversies over referees and VAR are heating up in these last days of Serie A. On the Inter front, two episodes have caused a lot of discussion and divided the experts: Marko Arnautovic’s goal at the end of the first half in the 1-1 draw at Genoa (draw by Radu Dragusin, Milan’s transfer target in the last few hours) before New Year, subsequently the goal that gave the 2-1 against Verona scored by Davide Frattesi on the day of the Epiphany. On 29 December there was controversy for Genoa-Inter and the goal that gave the Nerazzurri a momentary lead scored by Marko Arnautovic at the end of the first half. Should it have been canceled by the referee and VAR for Bisseck’s push on Strootman? Andrea Gervasoni at Open Var on Dazn – after playing the audio of the dialogue between referee Doveri and Var Irrati – explained that the goal did not need to be validated. “This year I give as an example a similar episode, in Verona-Lazio, where we cancelled. A two-handed push needs to be reviewed. Irrati in Genoa considered the push to be light. As a commission we believed that when there is a two-handed push, the VAR must recall. This is a goal that needs to be called back and I think the referee would have disallowed it. Irrati’s skill in evaluating situations live, gives him a lesser boost than that of Verona-Lazio, but there had to be a check. Technically, however, he worked well.”
