In today’s forum post, OnePlus explained that OPPO’s sub-brands are “working hard to integrate the code bases of OxygenOS and ColorOS.” Obviously, this change will not be noticed because it is happening behind the scenes. OnePlus further reiterated that OxygenOS will still be the “global” operating system for OnePlus branded devices, not ColorOS, which also runs on OPPO devices and OnePlus devices in China, but the development team did not mention whether OxygenOS will happen visually. The flagship product series (including T/R), OnePlus 8 series and newer devices will get 3 major versions of Android updates and 4 years of security updates.
Nord/Nord CE, the first OnePlus Nord and newer Nord/Nord CE devices will get 2 major Android version updates and 3 years of security updates.
Nord N series, starting from N10 and N100, all N series devices will receive 1 major version of Android update and 3 years of security updates.
This new schedule is closer to that provided by Samsung, which also provides three major updates and four-year security updates for Galaxy flagships and some mid-range devices. However, OnePlus did not mention the schedule of security updates. Generally speaking, OnePlus updates once every two months, which is slower than the release speed of Pixel and Samsung.
OnePlus also pointed out that this new schedule will not apply to many old phones. Only the OnePlus 8 series or newer products are eligible to enjoy this new schedule, which means that the OnePlus 7 series released in 2019 will still receive the last major update this year. Operator’s customized models may also cause trouble for these plans, because OnePlus said that software updates for these devices will “follow the requirements of our operator partners.”
