Brussels (German news agency) – In the debate about a new EU migration policy, the President of the European Parliament is urging haste. “We now need a constructive approach from all EU countries and a decision as soon as possible, ideally this Thursday, in order to be able to adopt the EU’s new migration and asylum package before the end of this legislative period in June 2024. We cannot allow ourselves time to lose, possibly even years,” said EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola of the “world” before the deliberations of the EU interior ministers this Thursday in Luxembourg.
It may be necessary for the member states to agree promptly in order to pass the extensive legislative package in time for the European elections in June 2024 and then to find an agreement with the European Commission and the member states in so-called trilogue negotiations. Depending on the outcome of the European elections, the newly elected EU Parliament could need a long time to find a consensus in the House of Representatives.
