Private Equity Product Registrations Drop by More Than 30% in 2023, Quantitative Funds Are Popular

Data from the private equity ranking network shows that in 2023, a total of 3,935 private equity managers have registered a total of 15,981 products. This data dropped by 8,986 from 24,967 in 2022, a decrease of 36%.

Analysts believe that the sharp decline in private equity registration products in 2023 is due to the difficult market environment and the poor profit-making effect. This has led to a decrease in enthusiasm among private equity managers for registration products. The increase in the registration threshold for private equity new equipment products to 10 million yuan is also cited as a reason for the decline.

However, private equity registration in 2023 is a “structural market”. Although the total number of registered products has dropped significantly, the proportion of quantitative products has increased rapidly.

Equity strategies remain mainstream, with stock strategy products accounting for 60.29% of the total, making it the largest niche strategy. Multi-asset strategies also saw increased demand, with 15.49% of the total products being registered in 2023.

Quantitative products are popular, with 28.91% of the total number of registered products falling under this category in 2023, an increase from 22.39% in 2022. Specifically, index-enhanced products were the most popular.

The larger the scale, the more registered products for private equity, with 87 private equity companies with tens of billions registering a total of 2,341 products, accounting for 14.65% of the total volume.
