Russian Aviation Intensifies Siege on Ukrainian Territory with Glider Bombs
Russian aviation has escalated its assault on Ukrainian terrain by deploying a barrage of 100 glider bombs daily along the 600-mile front, marking the 25 months of war between the two nations. These bombs, known as KAB, have been identified by Ukrainian intelligence as a critical component of the Russian arsenal, posing a significant threat to Ukrainian forces with limited defense options.
The severity of this threat was evident in the recent events involving the 110th Mechanized Brigade, where 125 KAB bombs per day compromised the defensive capacity of Avdiivka, a strategic location in eastern Ukraine previously held by Ukrainian forces. The brigade was already facing challenges, including a shortage of artillery ammunition exacerbated by the suspension of support by pro-Russian sectors of the US Congress in October.
Egor Sugar, a fighter from the Ukrainian 3rd Assault Brigade, described the devastating impact of the KAB bombs, which transformed the urban landscape into ruins during the withdrawal of forces from Avdiivka in mid-February.
In response to the Russian offensive, Ukrainian air defenses have been reinforced with the deployment of a Patriot surface-to-air missile unit near the Eastern Front. This move led to the successful interception and downing of 13 Russian aircraft, including Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bombers and Sukhoi Su escort fighters. However, a subsequent attack on the Patriot battery with Iskander ballistic missiles resulted in the destruction of two Ukrainian launchers, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian forces.
Despite these setbacks, there is optimism regarding the potential acquisition of F-16 fighters, which could significantly enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. The addition of these advanced aircraft could serve as a turning point in countering the threat of Russian glider bombers, although logistical challenges and missile shortages remain obstacles that need to be addressed.
