Compared to the previous quarter, manufacturers recorded an increase of 20.8 percent. The market researchers at IDC also expect a significant decline in demand in the fourth quarter.
Market researchers at IDC have reported a decline in sales figures for the global tablet market in the third quarter by 14.2 percent. Manufacturers only delivered 33.2 million units. Compared to the previous quarter, the industry achieved seasonal growth of 20.8 percent.
“The first three quarters of 2023 saw some of the steepest declines in the tablet market and the upcoming holiday season is not expected to be much different. As macroeconomic conditions do not improve dramatically, project and purchase delays are expected to extend into 2024,” said Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst at IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.
According to IDC, Apple sold 12.5 million iPads in the third quarter, 15.1 percent less than a year ago. With a share of 37.5 percent, the company once again clearly dominated the market. Samsung took second place with 18 percent, ahead of Lenovo (7.9 percent) and Huawei (6.8 percent). By far the biggest drop was recorded by Amazon – the company’s tablet sales fell by 49.5 percent, causing Amazon to slip from third to fifth place.
According to Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC, tablets not only have to compete against smartphones, but also against PCs. “However, the most successful tablet manufacturers have recognized that a tablet works best when used with, rather than against, a PC or smartphone. We therefore expect other tablet manufacturers to follow suit and offer a more consistent software and service offering, although it will take some time for this to become established.”
