ROME – More and more women are buying cars, they prefer sedans and not crossovers and the petrol engine is still (slightly) the preferred one. The identikit of the pink quotas comes out of the latest study by Unrae (the association of foreign manufacturers) presented on the occasion of the Pink Motor Day which explored female preferences in terms of models, engines and colors of the cars purchased in the last year. , comparing them with the data acquired in 2019 and 2020.

According to what was declared by Cristiana Petrucci, head of the Unrae study and statistics center, “in 2021 women accounted for 43% of new registrations compared to 37.6 per cent in 2005”. Although not inclusive of the number of women who use cars owned by men, the statistics certify a significant and progressive increase in the female audience at the wheel both for new cars and for the purchase of used models (share of 38 per cent ). At the segment level, the Unrae analysis dedicated to female preferences indicates that despite the decline recorded in the last three years, sedans continue to represent the architecture preferred by the fairer sex (58.5% share) ahead of crossovers; passed from 31% in 2019 to 34.7% in 2021. Crossovers, on the other hand, remain the majority for men with 45% of registrations against 41.5% of sedans, which slipped into second place.

The study also examined the demographic aspect, revealing how the 30-45 and 46-55 age groups remain the most active in car buying with respectively 26.4% and 27.4 percent of the total shares. while the more mature buyers (from 56 years upwards), gained two percentage points compared to 2019. On the engine front, women’s choices reflect the trend of the market with a clear decrease in diesel engines (down from 22 to 11% from 2019 to 2021) and gasoline (from 57 to 37%) as opposed to the exponential growth of hybrid powertrains which went from 6 to 32% in the last three years. The same period of time has seen the rise of electric (up by over 300% from a share of 0.3 to 3.6% in 2021) and plug-ins which from 0.1% of preferences in 2019, they have now reached 1.6% of the total. The LPG (10.6%) and methane (2.7%) engines remain more or less stable.

Returning to the forms and functions preferred by the female public, after the sedans and crossovers are placed off-road vehicles (8.3% of shares), minivans and station wagons (1.7 and 1.9%) while only 1% of women, drive a sports car. Overall, city cars and small cars cover almost 75% of the choices (25.8% in the A segment and 50.2% in the B segment) and going into the details of the electrified models most appreciated by women, we find Renault Captur (27% of shares in 2021), Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, Ford Kuga and Mini Countryman among the plug-ins and Renault Twingo (20.3%), Fiat 500, Dacia Spring, Volkswagen ID and Up as regards electric propulsion.

Finally, the Unrae study highlighted the growth in the average purchase price (19,770 euros in 2021 against 17,767 in 2019) and the colors preferred by the female public with gray firmly in the lead (32.3%) ahead of white (24, 3%), light blue (13.2%), black (12.2%), red (11.2%), green (1.8%), orange (1.8%), yellow, brown and purple.
