The history of Virginia began in 1951, when it was handed over to the city by architects José Augusto Bellucci and Luiz Maiorana, at the request of the Matarazzo family. With 11 floors, two blocks of apartments and four stores on the ground floor, the building was initially a high and medium standard residential building.

However, the decline of the central region starting in the 1970s had a sad impact on Virginia, which turned from residential to commercial and eventually abandoned. In 2019, the building closed its doors and was at the mercy of time.

In 2020, Somauma entered the scene to change this story. Revitalization is underway, and Virginia will soon illuminate the city again. Inside Somauma, the building is seen as a regenerative cell of the center of SP itself. And I paid a visit to the 56m² concept apartment designed by Vitor Penha, from Belezas Imperfeitas, which is awesome!

Virginia’s delivery standard is surprising, with an emphasis on reusing waste, recovering the building’s memory and partnerships with local industry. Residents will have access to modern amenities such as a gym, laundry facilities and bike storage.

In addition, the development features sustainable details, such as restored wooden parquet flooring, granite countertops made from Virginia demolition waste, restored ceramic tiles and expanded steel railings in the project’s original color.

A forest of native species on the roof and a restaurant overlooking the city, open to the public, are some of the features that make Virginia a special place.

The modernist facade designed by José Augusto Bellucci will be completely restored, as will the original apartments, which will be remodeled to offer different size and configuration options. The works are expected to be completed in 2025.
