Art Director Nigo Presents: KENZO Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Show

KENZO BRAND BOOM (Thrive): Committed to creating an authentic, everyday fashion wardrobe. For this KENZO Spring/Summer 2023 fashion show, artistic director Nigo expanded and enhanced the fashion universe created by the debut of the previous season. Looking back at the fashion attitude that the founder of the brand, Mr. Kenzo Takada, has always expressed in the past seasons of design, Nigo deeply agrees and takes this as an inspiration, not only in the practice of taking charge of KENZO’s creativity, and constantly implementing this concept:real-to-wear (The fashion design is truly reflected in real life), and the youth culture tonality shown on its debut is a continuation, creating a continuous aesthetic style for the brand. This season’s design is based on the silhouettes and patterns in the brand’s fashion archives. Through the unique Japanese aesthetic perspective shared by the brand’s founder and successor designers, the pattern imagery created by Mr. Takada Kenzo is deconstructed and reconstructed. . For Nigo, the creative process constantly evokes memories of his youth, exploring the evolution of KENZO at that time and the current Japanese fashion industry: the rise of the DC Brand Boom (Designer’s & Character’s Brand) brand in Japan in the 1980s, which was influenced by European and American fashion in that era , not only the works of Japanese designers (Designers) that are well-known in international and Paris fashion weeks, but also a large number of talented and individual Japanese local design brands (Character labels) have emerged. They are mainly casual and popular. Colored and featuring cartoon animals. The contrast between the two has created a diversified style of Japanese fashion: a niche fashion tributary with a longing for Parisian fashion culture and pattern-based fashion. And its spirit is also vividly displayed in this KENZO 2023 spring and summer series.

Contour

The classic patterns and patterns in Mr. Takada Kenzo’s fashion archives are given new interpretations, creating a fashionable wardrobe consisting of formal wear, work wear, dresses and skirts. Introducing the Preppy style, the British subculture formal dress style brought by Nigo continues to influence the design of this season’s suit silhouette. On the other hand, the design of this workwear is inspired by the uniforms of American railroad workers and military equipment maintenance workers in the 1930s and 1940s; while the shape of the skirt is based on the style of the brand’s fashion archives in the 1970s and 1980s: soft, long Skirts, decorated with fluffy, ruffled edges, occasionally sport tights and narrow skirts. In this way, a conversation is unfolding. Baseball jackets, bomber jackets, boots, these workwear items from Nigo featuring youthful silhouettes, together with this season’s skirts, present a unique style of modern womenswear, conveying the innate Feminine power to come.

theme

Intricate intarsia knits, baseball jackets, and vests embellished with graphic characters all offer a glimpse into this season’s tribute to the “DC Brand Boom.” The nautical look – sailor collar, sailor cap and stripes – symbolises Parisian haute couture from the perspective of Japanese fashion in the 1980s, and a nod to its introduction of navy uniforms into fashion. At the same time, the theme runs through ripstop, “drip” jacquard pieces and navy bunting, which in turn echoes college pennants on coats, tops and scarves. The stitching of various flags also originates from Mr. Kenzo Takada’s passion for creating his own brand logos and labels, which happens to be Nigo’s creative style preference-reproducing various labels from KENZO’s fashion archives and decorating them on clothing . Pixelated floral prints pay homage to the retro digital trend of the 80s, Boke crabapples evolve into cartoon leopard prints, and Hawaiian prints allude to early Hawaiian shirts cut from Japanese kimonos.
