by admin

ROME – Automatically switch to purely electric mode when entering an area closed to the circulation of classic vehicles with internal combustion engines. A very useful function that is now active on BMW plug-in hybrid models thanks to the “eDrive Zones” technology just made available in the cities of Rome, Milan and Turin. The service, according to the unique house in the world‘s automotive industry, ensures that electricity is automatically stored for use within the low-emission zone, if the destination is entered in the vehicle’s navigation system.

“The introduction of BMW eDrive Zones in Italy – said Massimiliano Di Silvestre, president and CEO of BMW Italy – represents another important step in our holistic approach to sustainability. In fact, today it is essential to adopt a circular approach to the issue, implementing a strategy that is attentive to all aspects: the choice of clean energy, efficient production, responsible use of resources, cutting-edge products, recycling. In this sense, a technology such as BMW eDrive Zones is a prime example of how measures capable of containing emissions can already be implemented today, especially when traveling in urban centers and in restricted circulation areas. We are proud to launch the service in Italy today and add Rome, Milan and Turin to the European cities that have already activated it in recent months. In the coming weeks we will also extend it to other Italian cities ”.

The service is an integral part of the standard equipment present on the plug-in hybrid models with the ID 7 operating system (Series 3, 5, 7, X3 and X5), and uses geo-fencing technology via the GPS of the navigation system, while eDrive Zones are graphically highlighted on the navigation screen so that drivers can see where they are. The eDrive Zones is also available via a free remote software update (ota) for compatible BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles, i.e. those already on the road. Finally, it should be noted that in a test carried out in the Netherlands in 2018 on plug-in hybrid vehicles it showed that 90% of all journeys within the test area in Rotterdam were carried out in purely electric mode, thus significantly contributing to the reduction. of polluting emissions.
