“The Story of Luopa” Huangmei Opera to be Released as Digital Film

“The Story of Luopa” is a classic Huangmei Opera character that has captured the hearts of audiences for years. Now, this timeless tale is set to be reimagined on the big screen in the form of a digital film.

A recent signing ceremony was held at the Hubei Opera Art Center for the production of the digital film “Luo Pa Ji,” which is a joint effort by the Chinese Dramatists Association, Hubei Provincial Performing Arts Group, and other units. The film, which is tentatively scheduled for release in June, was filmed in Beijing with all leading actors hailing from the Hubei Provincial Opera Art Theatre.

“The Legend of Luopa” is often referred to as one of the “Three Wonders of Huangmei Opera,” alongside “The Match” and “The Consort.” Despite its popularity on stage, the opera has not been widely disseminated beyond that medium. However, with the upcoming release of the digital film version, it is expected to reach a broader audience and bring the magic of Huangmei Opera to the forefront.

The story of “Luopa” revolves around themes of love, betrayal, and redemption. Wang Keju goes to Beijing for an exam, leaving behind his pregnant wife Chen Saijin. When a family heirloom is stolen and misconstrued, their lives take a tumultuous turn leading to a series of misunderstandings and eventually, a heart-wrenching reunion.

Director Dong Peiwen, known for his work on various opera films, expressed his excitement about bringing “The Story of Luopa” to life on the big screen. He emphasized the importance of capturing the essence of the characters and their emotional journey, rather than relying on flashy effects. For him, filming this opera is a “sacred mission” to preserve its beauty and depth for future generations.
