Guinea army dissolves government without explanation and says it will appoint another

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Military commanders in Guinea have dissolved the government without explanation and signaled they will appoint a new one, the president’s secretary general said.

The undersecretaries general will be in charge of day-to-day affairs until a new government is formed, General Amara Camara said in a video appearance in the evening.

The West African nation has been run by a military regime since soldiers deposed President Alpha Conde in 2021. The Economic Community of West African States, a regional organization, has pushed for a quick transition to civilian rule and Elections are planned to be held in 2025.

Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, chief of staff of the armed forces, said members of the dissolved government should hand over their vehicles and passports as soon as possible. His bodyguard had also been terminated and the ministers’ bank accounts had been frozen, he added.

Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, who leads the country, overthrew the president three years ago, arguing that he was preventing Guinea from descending into chaos, and reproached the previous government for reneging on its promises.

However, since taking power he has been accused of being no better than his predecessor.

“Today life has become more expensive and more difficult,” said Misbaou Doumbouya, a political analyst. “It is time for General Mamadi Doumbouya to assume his responsibilities.”
