Hummingbird Music’s Trademark Dispute with Deng Ziqi Sparks Controversy

A recent copyright statement issued by Deng Ziqi’s former management company, Hummingbird Music, on Weibo has ignited controversy and triggered discussions among fans. The statement, which was later deleted, has brought to light the ongoing trademark dispute between the company and the renowned singer.

Deng Ziqi, also known as G.E.M., announced the termination of her contract with Hummingbird Music in 2019. However, it has come to light that her stage name “Deng Ziqi” has been registered as a trademark by the former employer, raising questions about her ability to continue using the name.

According to the Tianyancha App, Hummingbird Music Co., Ltd. applied to register the “Deng Ziqi” and “GEM” trademarks in 2014 and 2010, respectively. The trademarks cover categories such as education and entertainment, advertising sales, and more, and many have been successfully registered.

In a surprising move, following Deng Ziqi’s contract termination, Hummingbird Music Co., Ltd. also applied to register the “GEM” trademark for fitness equipment and rope net bags and tents in 2020 and 2021, with registration completed in 2022. Additionally, the company applied to register the “GEM” trademark for education and entertainment in May 2023, with the current status awaiting substantive review.

The developments have sparked a conversation around intellectual property rights and the rights of artists to their stage names. Fans and industry insiders are closely following the situation to see how it unfolds and what impact it may have on Deng Ziqi’s career.
