She could not dress as she wanted, she was forced to eat in a separate room from the men, she was not free to decide anything and not even to watch TV: she just had to take care of the house, her husband and two children. If she tried to say no, she was insulted and sometimes beaten. For this reason, the Turin prosecutor asked for an imam accused of harassing and mistreating her wife to be sentenced to two years in prison, forcing her to accept any imposition from her.
“Even if many behaviors for the Arab culture can be considered normal, in this case they go beyond the limit and assume a criminal relevance”, explained the prosecution in the courtroom. According to the accusation, the woman was forced to marry without even choosing who her spouse was: a flash engagement and an arranged marriage in Morocco, which was followed by his choice to move to live in Italy. The man has always denied the allegations. The trial will continue on April 27 for harangue and sentence.
