Peking Opera Legend Sun Zhengyang Passes Away at 93

Shanghai, China – Today, the world of Peking Opera mourns the loss of Sun Zhengyang, a renowned performing artist and national first-class actor at the Shanghai Peking Opera Theater. Sun passed away on March 7 at the age of 93 at the Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital after battling an illness.

Born in 1931, Sun Zhengyang began his artistic journey at a young age and excelled in his craft. He studied under the guidance of esteemed mentors such as Liu Songqiao and Luo Wenkui, refining his skills in both civil and military Peking Opera techniques. Throughout his career, Sun performed alongside legendary artists like Zhou Enlai, Gai Jietian, and Yan Huizhu, captivating audiences with his crisp voice and humorous performances.

Sun Zhengyang’s repertoire included iconic plays such as “Blocking the Horse” and “Taking Tiger Mountain by Wisdom,” where his portrayal of “Luan Ping” left a lasting impression on viewers. Known as the “Famous Chou in the South of the Yangtze River,” Sun’s unique performance style bridged the gap between northern and southern schools of Peking Opera.

Even in his later years, Sun Zhengyang continued to grace the stage and inspire younger generations with his talent and dedication to the art form. He mentored aspiring artists and shared his wisdom, ensuring that his legacy would live on through the next wave of performers.

The Shanghai Peking Opera Theater plans to host a memorial service for Sun Zhengyang on March 11, honoring his contributions to the world of Peking Opera and celebrating a life well-lived. Sun’s passing leaves a void in the industry, but his spirit and passion for the art form will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.
